Kiteboarding Lessons FAQ

What if the wind is calm?

We can’t control the wind, however we can predict it! Most days are windy enough to kite, but sometimes the wind just doesn’t cooperate. In that case, we will take you surfing, exploring or anything else you would like to do! If you cannot complete all Pre Paid Lesson Hours or Equipment Rental Sessions due to a lack of wind during your scheduled classes or rental periods then you will be offered a Credit Voucher equal to or greater than the incomplete class hours or rental session. OR you may choose to take a partial refund to be returned to your credit card or paid in cash depending on your method of payment. In the case of pre-paid packages of lessons / rental you will be charged for the lesson hours or rental sessions completed at the base hourly / session rate or at the closest matching package rate with the balance refunded to you in cash or returned to your credit card, depending on method of payment. Please note credit card refunds my take up to 12 working days to appear on your statement.

How Long will it Take me to Learn?

It takes as long as it takes. Everybody is so different when it comes to kiteboarding, as I said a lot of skills carry over from other sports, So that if a guy is; a surfing/sailing/wakeboarding/paraglider instructor, he will pick up the sport much faster that someone who hasn’t ever done a board sport in their life. But as a rough guide, the longer kiteboarding courses are the best place to start. They range from 3 days to one week. However, most students require 8-12 hours to be self sufficient. I mean that honestly and I am NOT trying to upsell you lessons. I took 15 hours to get up and ride when I started. Does that mean I am a kook? hehe After the lesson phase is the self training phase, where the student practices what they learned in the lesson and gets water time, this is when they will go from a downwind rider to and upwind rider. This process often takes a month or 10-20 sessions. Don’t be too fixated or worried about how long it takes, because you do not want to rush the learning phase. If you put too much pressure on yourself you wont enjoy the process as much as you should. Just be sure to give yourself as much time and patience as you need, and you will breeze through it.

How is your School Different then the Others?

I rather be called your “kite Guru” then a Kite Instructor, but that name was already taken! We’ve captured the essence of the lifestyle and have created a sanctum where guests can feel what it’s like to be free and alive. Your experience is a two-way interaction. We don’t drop you off at the end of the lesson to fend for yourself. We invite you taste our elusive and exciting culture. We know that a vacation should be an escape and a renewal.

  • All Lessons Are Private or with YOUR group only
  • Over 10 years teaching Experience with ZERO accidents (besides a kite exploded once but we fixed it!)
  • Very Friendly, Hospitable, Knowledgeable and I LOVE to make people smile and become Happy Kiters!
  • I also have an IKO certified instructor, insurance, permits and all the other business blah blahs!!
How Safe Is Puerto Rico?

Safer than the Dominican Republic hands down. Puerto Ricans are VERY talkative and LOVE gringos, no joke. Sometimes I try to avoid conversation because I have things to do! The locals ARE VERY FRIENDLY,especially on this side of the island. I really can not explain it but I feel much safer here then in New York. There are some bad areas but you will not be passing through them unless you want to! San Juan (the city) can be dangerous but it is 90% from drug related crimes. This side of the island is more laid back for sure. I feel comfortable going anyway by myself on this island, but I tend to stay away from the bad areas which EVERYWHERE in the world has. Again, you will have no problems. There are alot of rich people here with most likely more money then you and I put together. They will be a target way before us!

Can I drive there with a my License from the States?

Yes you can, for up to 3 months before they “suggest” you get a Puerto Rican drivers license. Same traffic rules apply as well. Green=GO Red=Stop and Yellow=Go really fast to make the light. Cops here do not like talking on the cellphone and speeding. So be cautious. You can have a few beers and drive home from the bar, but don’t overdo it. They are somewhat strict on DWI here. The police are very courteous unlike in the states and are not aggressive. If you get pulled over for any reason just be nice and smile. They will do the same..Serious, don’t be scared!

Do the Local kiters respect visitors?

Yes but always give respect and right of way to ANY local in the water ANYWHERE you go! I do it when I travel and I get the same in return at my local spot. Again, the locals will probably talk to you so much that you might miss a Kite session! Remember, most people here speak English very well!

Is the wind REALLY better than Cabarete Dominican Republic?

About the Same, perhaps a bit stronger. I find it doesn’t have ANY holes in the wind like Cabarete did.. The Islands are only 80 miles apart, so expect the same wind. Aruba has Stronger wind then Puerto Rico or the Dominican but very gusty and offshore at most kite spots. That is the only place with stronger wind in the Caribbean. Most island see 18 knots everyday, but the most important thing is the learning location. We have a PERFECT UNCROWDED location for ALL RIDING LEVELS!

What if I prefer to rent my own hotel?

Call me and I will get you hooked up. I have some great discounts on local hotels that book through my students. Again, My house is your house and there is plenty of room, so why waste the cash!

Can I get a discount if I bring a group?

Of Coure! Call us for group rates.

Are there sharks or anything else to worry about?

In the Water: Barracuda but I only see them when I look for them snorkeling or diving. Yes there are sharks but they stay our past the reef. There has NOT been a shark bite on this side of the island since 1994. Nothing fatal from what I read. However, Google “Shark Attacks in Western Puerto Rico and see what pops up. Since I posted this there has been nothing. On the land: Spiders that look huge but nothing to worry about and big big HARMLESS insects. Bring Mosquito spray or I will give you some if you are here during the summer. Nothing is poisonous here, even the water I drink from the tap ALL THE TIME. Say that about the Dominican Republic Water!

Is it really all inclusive?

YES YES and YES I will even buy you your first couple of beers and keep the fridge stacked! From pick up to drop off (minus you airfare)!

Kiteboarding seems like alot to learn in a short amount of time. It really isn’t that hard. Once you get a good feel for the kite the rest will come naturally. There are TWO major obstacles to overcome. The first is not pulling in the bar when you feel the kite start to power up a little bit. The second is getting up on the board. All the other steps are very important but not as challenging as these two..

Learn to Kitesurf the Waves *Mini Camp*
Kitesurf Supervised Riding with Accomodations $60pp/ph

Kitesurfing is easy, but it is a whole different animal when it comes to riding waves, especially big waves. From having to release a trashed kite to getting in other Kiteboarders way, it is a different element to your kiteboarding arsenal. I learned the hard way on my own out in 10 foot plus swell years back. Instead of loosing your expensive gear, I will show you the tricks of wave riding. It is super fun and the sport seems to have gone in the direction of wave riding strapless surfboards over wakestyle or freestyle. So why not join the crowd and come out for a lesson. This lesson can be customized to your experience level. Please call or email ANY questions.

  • Choosing the proper gear for the conditions.
  • How to ride unhooked and why it comes in handy.
  • How to hold the power while unhooked.
  • Tips for getting out in the surf and how to catch waves..
  • What to do when your kite or you go down.
  • Surf rescue techniques.
  • Kite Etiquette while Kiting Waves

In the surf, you have to give considerations to surf etiquette, which basically means that you should not get in the way of anyone who is surfing, whether that person is a kitesurfer, windsurfer, or regular paddle surfer. Always yield to the rider on the wave regardless of who is on port or starboard. Avoid riding near surfers and never spray them. Stay outside of the surf until you are ready to ride a wave. Don’t try to catch every wave out there. The ocean is not going to run out anytime soon.
